General Summary

Lansing Trade Group is a trading company largely focused on the movement of physical commodities. We trade whole grains, feed ingredients, biofuels, freight and many other commodities within North America and internationally.

The company is headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas and has multiple U.S. offices as well as international offices in Geneva, Switzerland; Sao Paulo, Brazil and Chatham, Ontario. The company controls over 12 million bushels of elevator space through ownership or lease arrangements across the U.S. as well as various other strategically located storage and handling facilities for other commodities we trade.

Our graduate traders learn the fundamentals of the commodities business by rotating through different trading locations for six month increments, which expose trainees to different businesses and commodities traded at Lansing. The trainee should expect to rotate into a minimum of four locations, starting at our headquarters in Overland Park, KS and be flexible on relocation to other Lansing offices participating in the program at a later date. You will receive a broad and hands-on experience into all aspects of our business including buying and selling of commodities, daily analysis of markets and price developments and an understanding of Lansing's internal matrix.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Priorities: (job knowledge, accounting/management, business development, profitability, corporate contributions)

Priority and emphasis during the 6 month training rotations will be placed on the following:

    • Define Lansing's policies and procedures
    • Explain and familiarize trainee with Lansing's accounting system and "paper work" flow
      • Understanding of how contracts are written; basis price, price market zone, freight adjustment
      • Understanding of all daily reports; DPR, Unshipped, A/R
      • Utilization of LTAS and CMS
      • Familiarization of "line-up" purchase contract, sales contract, load numbers and freight rates
    • Introduce and familiarize trainee with basic trading terminology
      • Bid/Offer
      • FOB/Delivered
      • Trading phrases
      • Reseller/Broker
      • Flat price vs. Basis
      • Tons vs. Bushels
    • Explain trading and logistic dynamics
      • NCPA trade rules and quality specs
      • Modes of transportation and related price structures
      • Rail car billing
    • Introduce and implement concept of "relationship building"
      • Ethics
      • Teamwork within Lansing
      • Communication
    • Familiarize trainee with basic tools and concepts of trading
      • Arbitrage
      • Time spreads
      • Geographic spreads

Travel
Trainee will conduct site visits to facilities, elevators and/or customers while in each rotation in accordance to the location's needs. Travel will be limited per rotation and scheduled with ample notice to the trainee.

Routines
Daily and weekly routines will be set per rotation by the Location Manager.

Background Required:

A four year college degree and a minimum of five years of grain merchandising experience.
